To celebrate Arab American Heritage Month, join a group discussion with local artists Amena Sheikh and Noel Maghathe, where Amena will share the history of the Tatreez, the deep meanings ingrained in the land of Palestine, and Noel and Amena will discuss how artists today who aren't able to be on the land explore these motifs and this language through art in contemporary and experimental ways.
During this discussion, we will all either create our own motifs by drawing on paper or stitching preexisting motifs.
Noel Maghathe is a Palestinian-American multidisciplinary artist. Their practice is deeply rooted in their heritage, searching for home within the body and memory. Through sculpture, performance, and light, they explore themes of identity, cultural memory, and longing.
Maghathe has exhibited and performed internationally at venues including Abrons Arts Center (New York), Art League Houston, Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati), MMAG Foundation (Jordan), SPACE HUB (Palestine), Sawtooth ARI (Tasmania), Kino Club (Finland), 21C Museum (Cincinnati), and Mizna + RAWIfest (Minneapolis).
Amena Sheikh (b.1998, Cincinnati, OH) is a Palestinian American artist based in Cincinnati. Her artwork centers around the strong landscapes and subjects she photographs, and occasionally combines textiles with the prints of these images - specifically integrating traditional Palestinian embroidery. Through her work, Amena aims to convey a feeling of discovery, like a hidden secret shared between the viewer and the opened fruit, and the pride that comes with carrying the knowledge of a secret treasure, but also addressing the feelings of emptiness, longing, and isolation that often accompany it. Sheikh has exhibited throughout the Midwest, including galleries such as Wave Pool Gallery and the Cincinnati Art Museum, with projects supported by ArtsWave.
FREE Event! However Donations to the artists are warmly accepted.
